My 410 has always run fine but also always been quite smokey (esp from cold) so now had somewhere to do it i finally got around to changing the valve stem seals to see if they were the issue. Turns out it is now actually worse than ever ! So looks like its the rings (unless anyone can advise otherwise or any other possible things it could be ?) Im guessing the new fresh oil is making it worse as is now getting past the rings easier. Are the rings a fairly easy job does anyone know. Can they be done with engine in or does it need to come out. Also ive had a quick look for replacement rings but only seem to be able to find on ebay. Anybody recommend anywhere else to get them from or any experience with eBay piston rings. Seem to be about £50.
Or am I barking up the wrong tree and should be using this as an excuse for a bigger engine ;o)
Any help appreciated, cheers

hi, iv built many 410 engines over the years if you are planing doing the rings you will knead to bust glaze the bores before fitting new rings also you would knead to replace all the big end shells providing crank shaft is ok no scores ect by time you have purchased all the parts ie head gasket ,rings, big end shells, ect ect may be worth sourcing a good second hand engine , be careful if you go down the rebuild route there are over sizes rings and shells on a 410 from std .25 .50 .75 and +1mm the pistons if over size should say on top if you clean off the carbon, the shells after you remove them on the rear of each will have size on them , you would be best to remove engine to do all this , sorry it a bit tec but hope all this helps m8

Thanks very much for the reply and all the info. You do know your stuff. I had no idea re the different sizes from standard. My only concern with a replacement engine would be the, as you say 'a good second hand engine'. I could buy a replacement, fit (after sourcing a hoist) and end up no better or even worse off. Just although smokey my current engine has never failed and always starts runs fine. (I really shouldn't say that ) Hmmmh decisions ay ?

you do have a valid point if your jeep is worth looking after and you intend keeping it for a long time then i would go for new parts for sure , there are many engine shops that can get you all the parts you knead , on ebay there was a company in hythe nr folkstone that had all the parts new i will take a look later m8

Yeah I can see one on there just a bit far for me. Thanks for all your help though really appreciate it. Will have to decide what's best and as you say, how long I plan on keeping it. Think perhaps either way it may be a job for when the weather a bit better and the lanes not quite as fun so I am happy to have off the road for a bit maybe.
