hi guys and gals,
I'm matt and im completely new to this 4x4 stuff. i found your group on facebook which looks great - some of you have amazing looking mud eating machines!
being of novice ranks i need some help. i went on an off road course and got the bug... the budget will prob stretch to £2k with mods but thats about it.
i dont really want a 30yr old landy, but i was thinkking of an oldish sj413 samurai or a suzuki jimny.... i want to do some green laning and maybe courses once the skills have been built up.
ive be scowling the internet and all posts say that the jimny is a competent off roader... but you guys are the experts.... is it?!
would a jimny with off road tread tyres (std size tyres) be sufficient for green lanes? ive walked a few and seem fine, but in winter thats prob a diff story.
i'd prefer a newer jimny over an sj, and not worried about scratches etc... purely weekend fun.
please help and advise!
Matt

Both Jimny and SJ are well capable for green laning with a set of muds or all terrains thrown at them. A lift and bigger tyres are obviously gonna give you more ground clearance for off roading. SJ or Jimny.....mmmmmmmmmm ...............I have an SJ. You don't need to spend 2 grand. My motor is on 33inch wheels/tyres, but I bet I would not get much more than a grand for it on ebay. You'll pay more for a Jimny on 33s tho.

Welcome to the site Matt
I'd also go for an SJ just because your get more capable jeep for your money. Jimnys are great but they cost a lot more to build
Hope this helps

cheers guys!
I do have an elderly grandmother (84) who has a jimny and was surprisingly still driving round in the snow in devon this week! i think ill drop a hint shes too old to drive now and the donation would be gratefully received if not i'll def keep my eyes open for a half decent sj samurai....
for either, whats i've read is you can pretty much get away with doing a 2" lift without having to extend electrics, steering etc.... the spacers being relatively cheap. is this true?! does it involve a lot of hassle?!
really appreciate your help

Hi and welcome to the forum. Jimneys are a good car with the right job they are good, be carefull where you buy your modiification bits from (OFF ROAD ARMOURY) on ebay a big NO NO is my advise. I have an Sj myself and would never swap for a jimney Sj's are more stronger easier to modify with better results. But that is just my opinion. A standard SJ or Jimney with descent tyres is more than good enough for green laning.

You will get a decent idea of what they are fetching by keeping an eye on ebay. probrably 5-6 hundred quid for a 'HALF' DECENT standard one.
